432 Hz & 440 Hz

432 Hz vs 440 Hz: What's the difference?

Musical instruments are currently usually tuned to 440 Hz for the A above middle C.
This standard was established during an international conference in London in 1939 and later officially adopted by the International Organization for Standardization.

However, many sound healers and therapists consciously choose a different tuning: 432 Hz.

Why do many people choose 432 Hz?

432 Hz is often seen as a more "natural" tuning. In the world of sound healing, this frequency is widely used because many people perceive it as:

  • softer
  • warmer
  • deeper
  • more relaxing

is experienced.

Historically, 432 Hz was also used by various composers, and within sound healing, it is often said that this tuning resonates better with the body and a sense of inner peace.

šŸ‘‰ In practice, you will find that 432 Hz is much more commonly used in sound healing and singing bowls today.

What does science say?

Science takes a slightly more sober view.

For example, there is no hard evidence that 432 Hz is directly connected to natural phenomena such as the Schumann resonance (the Earth's electromagnetic frequency).

It is also true that how we experience frequencies is largely subjective.

In other words: what feels deeply relaxing to one person may make less difference to another.

The real difference in experience

Although both tunings are technically close to each other, many people do experience a difference:

  • 432 Hz → often feels calmer, rounder, and more inwardly directed
  • 440 Hz → often sounds clearer, sharper, and slightly more active

Neither is "good" or "bad" — it's about the experience.

So what is the best choice?

If you purely look at use in sound healing:

šŸ‘‰ 432 Hz is generally the most used and often better suited for relaxation and meditative applications.

That's why many people (and we too) consciously choose this tuning for singing bowls.

But ultimately:

  • Are you working with other musicians? → 440 Hz can be more practical
  • Are you working for relaxation, sessions or meditation? → 432 Hz is usually experienced as more pleasant

What really makes the difference

The tuning is important — but not the most important.

šŸ‘‰ Your intention, feeling, and connection with the instrument make the biggest difference.

A singing bowl that feels good to you will always work better than a bowl that "looks good on paper".

Finally

Whether you choose 432 Hz or 440 Hz:
both can bring relaxation, focus, and depth.

But in the world of sound healing, you clearly see that 432 Hz is preferred — precisely because of the softer, more harmonious experience.

Therefore, always listen to what feels good to you.
That's where the real power lies.
